For about 2 1/2 hours this week, students thought through a complex Math problem called “The Locker Problem.” The problem relates to numbers: factors, multiples, squares and primes but there’s no easy answers. In groups, students went through the process of solving a big problem. They tried different strategies; they worked collaboratively. They found patterns, and everyone was frustrated. However, the “ah has” started coming in after about an hour, and then students were able to get into it. A lot of trial and error, and natural problem solving strategies happening.
We continue on Monday, so we’re not giving out the answer yet. Here’s the link to the problem if you want to try it, but please don’t reveal the answer yet!
Here are the students in action this week, thinking through Math.
